What is emotion-focused therapeutic breathwork?

Breathwork is a guided practice that uses conscious, connected breathing — meaning there’s no pause between your inhale and exhale. This rhythm helps quiet the thinking mind and can shift you into an altered state of consciousness, giving you access to unresolved or unprocessed emotions and energy held in the body.

 

Emotion-Focused Breathwork is a trauma-informed approach that supports you to safely feel, release, and process these emotions. It’s especially helpful for those carrying trauma, emotional suppression, or internalised beliefs that can’t always be reached through talk therapy alone.

 

This style blends body-based (somatic) healing with emotional processing. It gently supports your nervous system, helping you regulate from the inside out and reconnect with your emotional body in a safe, grounded way.

 

The style of breathwork I facilitate is quite distinct because it dives into the heart of emotions rather than just the physical experience of the breath. While other forms of conscious connected breathwork emphasise breath as a means to enter an altered state of consciousness and process, my style of Emotion-Focused Therapeutic Breathwork uses a more targeted and guided approach that is designed to identify, surface, and release deeply stored emotional energy.

What to expect during your 1:1 session

In your 1:1  breathwork sessions, you'll experience a deeply transformative journey tailored to your needs. Each session is guided by the principles of tikanga Māori, ensuring a safe, culturally responsive, and supportive space for healing.

 

We our two hour session we begin with a grounding practice and intention setting, followed by a 60-minute breathwork journey where conscious breathing helps you release trauma, uncover emotions, and gain clarity whilst using emotion-focused techniques to guide deep subconscious healing.

As a trauma-informed facilitator, I create a safe and supportive space where you can process deep emotions at your own pace. The session includes energy healing and somatic techniques to support emotional release and restore balance.

 

We conclude the session with a reflective integration period to help you process your journey and gain insights, ensuring you leave feeling grounded and empowered.

Whether you're seeking emotional healing, trauma support, nervous system regulation, or a deeper connection with yourself, these remote 1:1 sessions offer the space for meaningful transformation and growth.

Meet your facilitator

Kia ora, I’m Mel — the heart and hands behind Mahu Wellness.

 

I’m a mother, wife, entrepreneur, and a fierce advocate for holistic healing and natural wellness.

I recently began my Mirimiri training at Rehua Marae in Ōtautahi, which adds to my journey as a trauma therapistwith a strong background in somatic, holistic, and energetic healing modalities.

 

I whakapapa to Ngāti Kahungunu, Rongomaiwahine, and Ngāpuhi, and my mahi is deeply grounded in the strength and wisdom of my tīpuna.

It is an honour to be a vessel for healing — helping to bring wairua and mauri into balance.

 

I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Social Anthropology, a Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling, and certification in breathwork. I’m currently completing postgraduate studies in Anthropology through the Te Angitu Māori research program at Massey University.

 

(My life motto might just be: “yes to all of it.”)

My work blends academic and ancestral knowledge to support trauma healing, reconnection, and decolonisation — offering a bridge between mainstream therapy and traditional Indigenous healing practices.

 

I created Mahu as a space where modern and natural systems align. A healing portal for those moving through trauma, addiction, and disconnection — with access to affordable, culturally-rooted care.

 

As a mother of three, my own healing and lived experience fuel everything I offer.

I walk this path, too — grounded in plant-based living, mindfulness, and wairua-led growth.

 

Through this lens, I’m here to support others to live in rhythm with their truth, their whakapapa, and their wellbeing.

Who should NOT book a breathwork session

I want everyone to have a safe and positive experience with breahwork so there are a few conditions under which breathwork may not be suitable for you. If you are pregnant, we recommend that you skip the session, as breathwork can be quite intense. Additionally, those with certain medical conditions such as cardiovascular disease, a history of heart attacks, high blood pressure, epilepsy or seizures, severe asthma, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, dissociative disorders, or a significant history of trauma should also avoid participating. If you’re on prescription blood thinners, it’s a good idea to consult your doctor first. It’s also important to note that participating in breathwork while under the influence of alcohol or drugs is not permitted. These substances can interfere with your ability to engage safely and may increase emotional or physical risks during the session. We advise not consume alcohol 24 -48 hours prior and drugs no sooner than 72 hours.

If any of these apply to you, I encourage you to consider other forms of support to ensure your safety and well-being or to reach out to us to see how else we may be able to assist you.
